I have read that flowers have healing powers.

Yes, conceivably. But how do they heal? I am curious how it is that a flower could hold healing for me. Or for you.

Victor and I started photographing flowers about two years ago. Of all possible subjects, we often wonder what drew us to flowers? We never consciously thought: “We should photograph flowers, they will heal us.”

It just happened. A chance encounter in a Venice garden brought the powerful splendor of flowers into focus. It was as though we could hear them speak ― not in human language of course, but they spoke nonetheless. A poppy’s soft creases demanded a click of the shutter. An orchid enticed us to lean down and look more closely into its secret recesses. In the presence of a peony’s effortless beauty, our heart rates slowed and a calm spread outward from heart to fingertips.

All we know is that each encounter with a new flower brings an effusive WOW! Their radiance lasts only a few days but is worth every moment.

In truth, understanding the healing power of flowers is an ongoing exploration. Even so, we can feel their effect in small and gradual inner changes: a little more joy, a deeper capacity to value the ephemeral nature of life, a growing trust in goodness and renewal, and with each witnessing of a full bloom, a quickening of creativity.

Where Does Photographic Style Come From?

Photo/Text/Editing: Victor Osaka

What informs my style as a photographer? I asked myself this question recently. I have come to the conclusion that I am influenced by many things—from current trends in photography, to the technology of the equipment I use, and the range of photography I grew up admiring. And then, there is personal experience…

Victor_20131019_4025xx

Reflecting on my childhood, the biggest influence on my style is due to an unfortunate condition. As a child my eyesight was so poor that everything was a blur. I could not even discern the leaves on a tree.

I remember stepping out of the optometrist’s office wearing my first pair of glasses. Right outside his office was a large tree. I looked up and for the first time saw the beauty of the leaves on a tree. They were shimmering in the sun. I can still see and even hear the sound those leaves made in the gentle breeze. I could not take my eyes off this amazing sight.

So, it is interesting to review my body of work and recognize this important influence on my style. To this day, the images that most speak to me have a very narrow depth of field.

Sharp edges grow from the point of focus and the remainder of the image is blurred so as to bring total attention to the sharp details.

I recommend taking a look at your own library of images to see if you can identify what influences your style. It is a very revealing exercise.

Seeds of Change

Photo/Text: Aline LaPierre    Photo Editing: Victor Osaka

The garden is alive with anticipation…
Can you feel it?
Summer’s long days
Are about to culminate
In the launch of thousands of sun-drenched seeds.

Contemplation

Inhale. Exhale.
Feel yourself
Looking out through the windows of your eyes.
Let the late summer’s shimmering light
Stream in through your open pupils.

Let it caress your heart.
No need to reach or grasp.

Within each flash of light
Is a seed
Carrying the promise
Of a new beginning.

Inhale. Exhale.
Call in the light
Set an intention
For renewal.

The Perfect Lotus

The beautiful lotus rises through the murky waters of ponds and lakes. When it blooms, it floats upon the surface, its perfect petals untainted by the mud from which it has emerged. In the sacred symbolic language of Hinduism and Buddhism, the lotus perfectly embodies the soul, rising up through the murkiness of worldly experience until it reaches the surface of the spiritual realm and blooms, vibrant and pure, free from taint and attachment.
